Testimony: Praying for the Visa

Posted on March 3rd 2021

We had some visa issues that needed to be resolved in a very tight timeline. If unresolved, our family may need to travel during this pandemic, which would be troublesome with two young children. Outwardly speaking, we had this problem, we prayed, and the Lord solved our problem. We surely and still thank the Lord for His provision. But even more, we worship the Lord for His inward leading to pray to Him every step of the way. In this process, the Lord Himself, not what He gives, became our most precious experience, and it is this inward guidance in prayer that I would like to testify.

This precious experience began when I first brought our issue to the church. In a prayer meeting the brothers and sisters prayed for us. As we were praying, I had a sense that we were praying in harmony (Matthew 18:19) and the petition had reached the Lord (Philippians 1:19). This sense then gave me another sense that the Lord has answered our prayers and that the visa would be released to meet our need.

Around the same time, I was also praying more with a couple brothers who are more experienced in the Lord. We prayed according to Matthew 6:33, seeking God’s kingdom and God’s will first. From our praying in this way, there was a strong sense that no matter the outcome, I knew that it would be according to the Lord’s will (what He has planned for us), and so there was nothing to worry about.

Soon afterwards, we prayed more with some more brothers and sisters. This time, we had a more specific sense that what we wanted—to stay in the US for now—was actually aligned with what the Lord wanted for not only our own welfare, but more importantly, for our service with the brothers and sisters (Romans 15:16). I testify that the Lord’s speaking to me in all these prayers gave me the assurance that He was with us and that He would release the visa in due time.

Of course, there were also times of trials where things did not go as smoothly as planned. For example, I had a colleague who was in a very similar situation. Our employer submitted a response to USCIS for him, and that response got him the visa. However, the same response did not work for my case, even though our case and his case were very similar. We worried for a couple of days. But in continual prayer with the brothers and sisters, we saw that this was Satan’s attack (Ephesians 6:11), and we applied the Lord’s victory over Satan (Hebrews 2:14). We were also reminded that these trials were actually for the proving, refining, and strengthening of our faith (1 Pet. 1:7).

Normally speaking, this situation would have caused me continuous and choking anxiety. But through all the prayers, we were sustained and guarded by the Lord as our peace (Phil 4:6-7). I testify that during these two months, I did not worry much (except for the couple of days prior to dealing with the enemy’s attack). Rather, we learned not to look at the outward situation but to look to the Lord. By always looking to the Lord in prayer with the brothers and sisters, we received faith from the Lord that He had taken care of the matter (Hebrews 12:2). We thank the Lord for taking care of the visa, but we worship Him even more for teaching us to take Him as our centre in every situation.
